The Philosopher

Introversion, iNtuitive, Thinking, Perceiving (INTP)

INTP Capsule Personality Description

“Seek to develop logical explanations for everything that matters to them. Theoretical and abstract, interested more in ideas than in social interactions. Quiet, contained, flexible, and adaptable. Have unusual ability to focus in depth to solve problems in their area of interest. Skeptical, sometimes critical, always analytical.”19

The Five Steps for INTPs

Thanking: Routine social obligations are not your forte. Since you can be the “absent-minded professor,” and sometimes procrastinate, let your nonprofit handle your acknowledgments. You can provide the icing on the cake. For example, if you read an article that pertains to an issue of interest to your donor, forward it on, reminding them of the connection and thanking them for their support.

Engaging: Engage donors through ideas, such as inviting them to an after-show discussion of a play or to participate in strategic planning. If you’re supposed to send them progress reports, get a sample, and do so via email. Plan to carbon copy your nonprofit on your email correspondence so that they can follow up (and remind you if you forget!)

Researching: If you’re good at data management/system design, challenge yourself to devise a simple, free way to help your nonprofit identify wealthy constituents. You may be a surprisingly shrewd judge of human character because you are unimpressed by possessions, charisma, or social standing. You see what is, not what people want you to see. Research may be your most preferred step in the fundraising process.

Cultivating: Use the Cultivation Activity chart in chapter 2 to identify one or two cultivation opportunities you can enjoy with intimate groups. If you like puzzles and wordplay, perhaps you could invent ways your nonprofit can engage new supporters online, such as environmentally themed crossword puzzles. If you’re thinking, “I can come up with something cleverer than that,” I challenge you to do so! Approached this way, you may find cultivation becomes one of your preferred fundraising steps.

Asking: Pick the newest idea/theory/approach your nonprofit needs funded and help make the case to relevant government agencies, foundations, and/or corporations. You will be particularly effective when helping to develop grants proposals if you’re a content expert who is knowledgeable about the initiative to be funded.
